Freight from Finland to the Czech Republic
From Finland to the Czech Republic we mainly carry paper, board and plywood, stainless steel, machinery and power equipment. A full load from Helsinki to Prague (about 1,800 km) takes roughly 3–5 days, either on the ferry to Travemünde in Germany or via the short crossing to Tallinn and then overland through the Baltic states and Poland. Tell us the collection point and date early so the ferry space can be booked; the calculator gives an indicative price.
Two gateways out of Finland: Travemünde or Tallinn
For road freight, Finland is effectively an island. A lorry can only reach central Europe by sea, or by a long detour through Lapland and Sweden that we do not use for Czech deliveries. In practice the choice is between two routes:
| Helsinki–Travemünde | Helsinki–Tallinn + Via Baltica | |
|---|---|---|
| Sea crossing | around 29–30 hours, daily sailings | a few hours, many sailings a day |
| Road leg | Travemünde – Berlin – Dresden – Prague | Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland |
| Driver | takes the daily or weekly rest on board | spends most of the journey at the wheel |
| Best for | full loads from southern and central Finland | consignments that can be combined with a Baltic collection |
The long crossing to Germany looks slow, but the driver rests throughout, so the truck can roll straight off the ship and keep going. Going via Tallinn means less time at sea but four countries by road. More on the Baltic route is on our freight from Estonia page.
Finland’s industrial centres, from Helsinki to Tornio
Finnish exports rest on forestry, steel and engineering. Collection points are spread across the whole country, and the further north they lie, the longer the drive to the port alone becomes.
| City | Industry | What we typically carry from there |
|---|---|---|
| Helsinki | port, distribution, electronics | stock from distribution warehouses, electronics and components, often by groupage |
| Hyvinkää | lifts and cranes | lift parts, crane components and hoists |
| Tampere | engineering, forestry and mining machinery | machines and spare parts, drilling and extraction equipment |
| Kouvola and Kotka | paper and board mills in Kymenlaakso, port | graphic paper and packaging board on reels |
| Lappeenranta | paper and pulp on Lake Saimaa | paper, pulp, sawn timber |
| Vaasa | engines and power equipment | electric motors, transformers, parts for marine and power-plant engines |
| Oulu | electronics, packaging board | telecoms equipment and electronics, board |
| Tornio | a large stainless steelworks on the Swedish border | stainless sheet and strip in coils |
Birch plywood and sawn timber come from many smaller mills across the Lakeland region.
Heavy paper reels and steel coils use up a trailer’s payload long before its floor space. Machinery on pallets or in crates is usually lighter but sensitive to shocks and moisture; we cover securing it under machinery transport.
Accompanied truck or unaccompanied trailer?
Ships between Finland and Germany routinely carry not just complete rigs with drivers but also trailers on their own. Port tractors take the unaccompanied trailer on board in Helsinki, and in Travemünde a different tractor unit collects it and brings it to the Czech Republic. Nothing changes for the shipper, who loads exactly as before. Which option works out better in a given week depends on spare capacity with the shipping lines and carriers; our quote will always state it.

Ice, darkness and winter kit
Winter in Finland runs to different rules from central Europe. No lorry gets by without winter tyres, daylight is short and roads in the north stay snow-covered for months. Baltic ferries are ice-strengthened, yet a frozen sea can still lengthen the crossing. From Oulu or Tornio, add an extra day, because the drive to the port of Helsinki alone covers several hundred kilometres.
Timing the collection to meet the ship
- Give us the loading date a few days ahead, so the carrier can book space on the ferry.
- Stick to the loading time – a delay of a few hours can mean a missed sailing and a day waiting at the port.
- Have the paperwork ready – invoice and CMR; Finland is in the EU, so no customs declaration is needed.
- Bear the weekend in mind – a ship arriving in Germany on Sunday does not help much, as lorries over 7.5 t may only set off in the evening.
Groupage is available for a few pallets, though it takes longer than a full load. Other countries are listed in our EU overview, and neighbouring Sweden has its own page, freight from Sweden. To see roughly what a load from Finland will cost, try the calculator.
