Freight from Latvia to the Czech Republic
Most freight from Latvia to the Czech Republic is timber and wood products – sawn timber, birch plywood and pellets – along with horticultural peat and food. Riga to Prague is around 1,300 km along the Via Baltica through Lithuania and Poland, and a full load takes 2–3 days. We arrange the truck through contracted carriers; the calculator gives an indicative price and we email a firm quote.
Timber, peat and plywood: Latvia’s main exports to Czechia
Forest covers roughly half of Latvia, and wood processing is one of the country’s biggest export industries. Trucks heading for the Czech Republic therefore tend to carry packs of sawn timber, birch plywood boards, wood pellets, briquettes and cut components for furniture makers. Peat is the other classic load: growing media from Latvian bogs supply nurseries and garden centres across Europe, and warehouses are stocked for the spring season during the winter months.
Latvian towns where Czech-bound trucks load
Most of Latvia’s industry is in and around Riga; the rest is strung out along the main roads to the Lithuanian border and in the port towns on the coast. Besides timber and peat, these places also send us food, medicines and metal products.
| City | Industry | What we typically carry from there |
|---|---|---|
| Riga | wood processing, food, pharmaceuticals, electrical engineering | sawn timber and plywood, tinned fish, rye bread, drinks, medicines |
| Olaine | chemicals and pharmaceuticals | medicines, chemical intermediates |
| Jelgava | peat processing, food industry | peat-based growing media, food ingredients |
| Valmiera | glass-fibre manufacturing, dairy | glass-fibre fabrics and insulation, dairy products |
| Liepāja | metalworking, timber, fish processing, port | steel structures and metal parts, sawn timber, fish products |
| Daugavpils | engineering, metalworking, textiles, food | drive chains and transmission parts, cables, clothing, food |
Choosing the right trailer
| Goods | Suitable vehicle | Points to watch |
|---|---|---|
| sawn timber, plywood in packs | side-loading curtainsider, or a mega trailer | long packs are loaded from the side by forklift; straps and bearers are essential |
| pellets in bags or big bags | 13.6 m curtainsider | heavy cargo – the weight limit is reached before the deck is full |
| peat and growing media | curtainsider or mega | compressed bales are bulky, so a mega trailer takes more |
| fish, dairy products | refrigerated trailer | the shipper sets the temperature and it goes on the CMR |
| single pallets of mixed goods | groupage | slower than a dedicated full load |
We use groupage for up to six pallets, a part load for 7–18 pallets and, from about 18 pallets, a full 13.6 m truck with space for 33 Euro pallets.
The road from Riga

The Baltic states are linked to the rest of the EU road network by a single corridor, the Via Baltica. From Riga the truck heads via Bauska into Lithuania, past Panevėžys and Kaunas to the Polish border, then on through Suwałki and Warsaw or Białystok towards Wrocław and the Czech Republic. The whole route stays inside the EU, so there is no duty to pay and an invoice plus a CMR consignment note are sufficient. Poland has, however, been running temporary checks on its border with Lithuania since 2025, which can mean queues.
Latvia’s large ports – Riga, Ventspils and Liepāja – matter for road freight to Czechia mainly when your goods arrive in Latvia by sea and need onward transport by lorry.
Road charges along the way
In Latvia, vehicles over 3.5 tonnes pay a time-based road user charge (daily, weekly, monthly or annual), graded by weight and emission class. Lithuania also still uses a time-based vignette, with a switch to the distance-based Via Toll system planned for 2027. Poland collects tolls electronically through e-TOLL and the Czech Republic charges by distance. The carrier pays all of these and they are built into the freight price we quote.
Spirits and beer: excise goods

Latvian spirits and beer are subject to excise duty. Between tax warehouses they move under an electronic administrative document (e-AD) in the EMCS system, created by the consignor. See our page on wine and beverage transport for details.
